How to Use and Care for Your Magnetic Knife Rack or Block

Magnetic knife racks and knife blocks are both a functional and visual upgrade for any kitchen. Crafted from natural wood and designed to securely store your knives, they require correct use and light maintenance to ensure longevity, safety, and beauty over time. With a few simple habits, your magnetic knife rack or block will continue to protect your knives and look exceptional for years.

Correct Knife Placement on Magnetic Racks and Blocks

When placing a knife on a magnetic rack or block, technique matters. Always keep the knife parallel to the face of the rack or block. Angle the spine of the knife toward the surface first, allowing the magnet to gently pull it into position. This method ensures the blade edge never makes contact with the face of the rack.

To remove a knife, reverse the motion. Keep the blade straight and twist the edge away from the rack so that only the spine is touching the surface. Once the edge is clear, pull the knife away smoothly.

This simple motion prevents cutting into the cork or plastic face of the rack and avoids scratching or chipping your knife against the wall or surrounding surfaces.

Keep Knives Clean and Dry Before Storage

Before placing any knife on your magnetic rack or block, make sure it is clean and completely dry. Moisture trapped between the knife and the wood can cause long term damage to both the blade and the rack.

Protective oils applied to knives, such as camellia oil, are perfectly fine. However, water left on the blade can be absorbed over time. Keeping your knives dry helps preserve the finish of your rack and prevents unwanted staining or deterioration.

Caring for the Wood Finish

All of our magnetic knife racks and blocks are finished with a blend of food safe, natural oils. This finish nourishes the wood, enhances its grain, and protects it from daily kitchen use. Like any wooden product, the oil finish will gradually wear and should be refreshed occasionally.

To re oil your rack or block:

  1. Remove all knives and utensils and place them safely on a counter or work surface.

  2. If you have a wall mounted rack, take it off the wall. Knife blocks can remain in place.

  3. Using a clean cloth, apply a thin, even layer of mineral oil or Tung oil to the exposed wood.

  4. If your rack or block has a cork face, apply oil carefully and avoid over saturating the cork, especially around the edges.

  5. Allow the oil to penetrate the wood for up to five minutes.

  6. Wipe away all excess oil with a clean, dry cloth, paying close attention to the cork edges.

Regular oiling helps prevent the wood from drying out, cracking, or losing its natural depth of colour.

Long Term Performance and Beauty

With correct use and occasional maintenance, your magnetic knife rack or block will remain a reliable and striking part of your kitchen. Proper knife placement protects both the blades and the rack surface, while simple care ensures the wood stays nourished and visually refined.

A few mindful habits are all it takes to keep your knives sharp, your rack pristine, and your kitchen looking its best.
